Liberia’s capital city, Monrovia, is set for a major transformation according to Mayor John-Charuk Siafa who officially launched Monrovia Week with a compelling call for unity and action to build “The Monrovia We Want.”
Opening a weeklong festive celebration for the city government and its residents, the mayor outlined an ambitious vision to restore Monrovia’s former glory and tackle pressing urban challenges.
The mayor declared that Monrovia is more than just a city because it is the pulsating heart of the nation, embodying resilience, hope, and the shared dreams of all its inhabitants.
He outlined plans to include the securing of a well-planned neighborhood for families, a thriving business climate that attracts investment along with Enhanced opportunities for youth in education and employment.
Further in his vision for the city, Major Siafa called for stronger public safety through community-driven policing and modernized waste management with environmentally friendly technology.
According to him, the vision he has for Monrovia is ambitious but achievable confirming and emphasizing that transformation will require a collective effort beyond political and bureaucratic barriers.
Urging citizens to take ownership of their city’s future, the mayor encouraged Monrovians to volunteer, engage in community initiatives, and champion efforts to maintain cleanliness and security.
“Monrovia is ours to cherish, to nurture, and to love. Together, let’s build a city of hope, unity, and pride not just for Liberia, but as a shining example to the world.” he said.
However, Mayor Siafa acknowledged the current challenges, including poor waste management, economic struggles, and limited opportunities for youth.
According to him, with only 28% of the city’s waste being effectively managed, it shows that Monrovia is facing an urgent environmental crisis.
Reflecting on the past he painted a vivid picture of a once-thriving Monrovia, where clean streets, vibrant markets, and a booming tourism industry defined the city.
From the bustling markets to iconic landmarks like Rivoli Cinema, Ducor Hotel, and Hotel Africa, the capital was once a beacon of prosperity in West Africa.

Gracing the occasion and delivering a special statement on behalf of the President, Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to supporting Monrovia’s renewal.
He emphasized that national progress is inseparable from the progress of the capital, highlighting ongoing efforts in urban development, infrastructure enhancement, and public safety.
“The President remains committed to ensuring that Monrovia is not just the capital of Liberia but a model city for sustainable development,” the Minister stated.
He called on Liberians to see Monrovia Week as more than just a celebration but as a call to action to uphold civic responsibility.
As the week unfolds with events focused on cultural heritage, urban planning, and community engagement, President Boakai’s message sets a strong foundation for renewed national effort in making “The Monrovia We Want” a reality.
From the opening ceremony, where hundreds of citizens gathered at the Monrovia City Hall to participate and witness a colorful celebration on Wednesday February 12, 2025, more activities are expected to take place including a roundtable discussion and ideas sharing session, sports, a general cleaning and the state of the city address.
