Elderly residents of the Old Folks Home in Central Buchanan are facing dire conditions, struggling with severe hunger, lack of basic necessities, and a deteriorating living environment.
The residents are now making urgent appeals to the government and humanitarian organizations for immediate assistance.
During a visit by reporters on yesterday, the elderly individuals shared heartbreaking accounts of their daily struggles, particularly their inability to secure sufficient food.
Many of them, including James Zuahgar, Esther Ben, Gladdy Yeabaye, and Joseph James, revealed that they often go to bed with only breadfruit and farina as their main source of sustainability.
They fear that the persistent food shortage is putting their health at serious risk.
“We are suffering,” said Esther Ben. “Some days, we barely have enough to eat. This is not how we should be living in our old age.”
Beyond the issue of hunger, the residents also lack basic living necessities, such as mattresses.
With no proper bedding, many are forced to sleep on the cold, hard floor, further worsening their health conditions; additionally, the home has been plunged into complete darkness every night due to the absence of electricity, adding to their discomfort and insecurity.
“Our government has abandoned us. This is how we are being treated,” the elderly residents lamented, expressing their deep frustration over what they perceive as neglect by authorities.
The facility currently houses around 21 elderly individuals, all between the ages of 60 and 70, who depend on external support for survival.
However, with limited assistance coming their way, their living conditions continue to deteriorate.
The residents are now calling on the government, charitable organizations, and well-meaning individuals to intervene and provide urgent relief, particularly in the form of food, mattresses, and electricity.
