The Liberian government has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s hard-earned peace in the face of ongoing protests.
Speaking in Monrovia on Tuesday, Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah acknowledged that while some protesters are peaceful, others appear to have ulterior motives aimed at portraying a breakdown of the country’s stability.
Minister Piah accused certain individuals of issuing subversive threats and making statements intended to undermine national security.
Despite these provocations, he reassured the public that the government remains focused on Liberia’s development and committed to protecting peace as enshrined in the 1986 Constitution.
Addressing reports of alleged casualties during Tuesday’s protest, Minister Piah clarified that no live bullets were fired by members of the law enforcement agency. “There was zero round of live bullets fired, no bullet was fired,” he told journalists.
He criticized some media outlets for publishing unverified reports of deaths during the protest, describing such actions as unfair and irresponsible.
Minister Piah reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and protection of all citizens while maintaining public order.
The government explained that security forces used only non-lethal measures to disperse protesters who were obstructing traffic and refusing police instructions near the Capitol Building.
While reaffirming its respect for citizens’ right to protest, the government emphasized that demonstrations must not infringe on the rights of others.
“The government responsibly assures the public of its commitment to protecting peace, lives, and property,” Minister Piah stated, Meanwhile Minister Piah has also urged citizens to go about their daily activities without fear.
