Lofa Shocks County Meet Defending Champions -As Kieta’s Late Strike Sinks Bomi County

Lofa County has progressed to the next stage of the National County Sports Meet (NCSM) after Alieu Kieta converted a late minute free kick to clinch a 3-2 victory over county meet defending champions, Bomi County in Monday, January 20 first quarter finals encounter. The match was the first of two quarter final encounters played at the jammed packed Samuel K. Doe Sports complex in paynesville.
The two teams played to an entertaining county meet football but Lofa had to come from behind to clinch what was described as one of the most deserving wins. Defending Champions Bomi opened the scoring in the early quarters of the match but Lofa quickly responded to get the scoreline leveled as the first half of the match ended 1-1.
As one of the prepared teams in the competition, Lofa mounted excessive pressure and took a deserving 2-1 lead, but Bomi County’s Jericho Sackie 65th minute goal was sufficient to bring the scoreline leveled for the second time in the match.
Following the 65th minute equalizer, both teams had their supporters on their heels after several intriguing football displays. Bomi County wasted couple of chances but it was the Lofans that got a late minute deserved goal to sail to the next stage of the competition.
Over the weekend, Grand Kru and Maryland Counties secured their places in the semifinal of the ongoing National County Sports Meet football version. The Kru boys who reached the quarter-final as runners -up of Group C on Saturday, January 18, 2020 defeated Group A winner Rivercess 2-0 at the SKD Sports Complex in the presence of the chief patron of Sports, President George M. Weah.
Rufus Kenndey gave Grand Kru the lead in the first half from the penalty spot as he sent Rivercess keeper Morlik Keita the wrong way. Rivercess fought to get the equalizer during the first half but Kennedy and his tight-defenders stood their ground to end the first half 1-0 to the boys from Barclayville.
After the break, Rivercess pressurized Grand Kru but could not get the needed result as their strikers wasted several scoring chances. Adolphus Torbor of Muscat FC fired Grand Kru into the semifinals with his 56th minute strike that saw Grand Kru secure a 2-0 victory.
Grand Kru will now face Lofa County who also made their way to the semifinal after beating Bomi County in what proves to be one of the finest display of the National County Sports Meet this year.
In the second match, Maryland County and Sinoe County played out to a goalless draw after full ninety minutes of play plus extra 30 minutes. Maryland dominated possession from start to finish but could not get the opener as they eliminated Sinoe from the penalty spot 6-5.
The Marylanders will battle either Nimba or Gbarpolu County in the last four for a place in the final. Daniel Toe who captained Maryland for the first time after missing their group matches was instrumental in his side’s win as he worked away with the man of the match award. Nimba and Gbarpolu counties were in action in the day’s last quarter final match. Up to press time the scoreline was 1-1. Detail will be published in our next edition. Writes D. Webster Cassell
