The County administration of Nimba has disclosed that a peace festival aimed at fostering reconciliation between disputing parties over land is expected to kick off soon in the county.
Speaking to this media outlet, Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) County Administrator Daniel Zekpeh, revealed that residents of Gblor Kweepea and the people of Kparblee district have agreed to settle all issues pertaining to land dispute between the two towns.
According to Administrator Zekpeh, the program is expected to bring together members of the Nimba Legislative Caucus, women’s groups, invited guests and other stake holders, under the watchful eyes of Superintendent Kou Gono.
It can be recalled that at the beginning of 2023, residents of Kweepea in collaboration with residents of Gbotuo Village clashed with the residents of Barplay Town over “snail.”
That altercation reportedly led to the death of Solomon Gaye of Kparblee and left several other persons wounded from the Gblor Kweepea belt.
Since the incident, tension has been brewing between the two hostile groups in demand of boundary harmonization.
Geographically, Barplay Town shares boundary with Kweepea Town and is situated along the Kparblee belt and is mostly dominated by Krahn speaking people.
The County Administrator Zekpeh, has emphasized that peace and reconciliation remain the focus of the county administration.
“Since we took office, we were able to settle Gblor Kweepea and Barplay town land dispute including other areas in the county,” Administrator Zekpeh, disclosed to the press.
Meanwhile, in an effort to ensure a participatory program, the zone chief of Kweepea, chiefs and elders of Barplay will be duly informed by the County authority with reference to the date and venue for the implementation of the peace festival, according to official sources.
