By Precious D. Freeman
The Liberia National Police (LNP) has announced the immediate dismissal of two officers, Assistant Commissioner Sam S. D. Gballah and Patrolman Augustine G. Ben, due to gross misconduct linked to serious allegations of impropriety.
The decision follows a thorough investigation conducted by the Special Investigation Team of the Professional Standards Division (PSD).
On October 12, 2024, at approximately 6 p.m., Patrolman Ben, accompanied by suspended officer Sansee C. Massaquoi, unlawfully entered the premises of the Luxury Hotel in the Thinkers Village Community.
Acting under the instructions of ACP Gballah, the officers intimidated and arrested two victims, Dean Nguyen and Levan Tu, without any legal justification.
The investigation revealed that the officers violated the victims’ privacy, resulting in the unlawful arrest and seizure of their personal belongings, including cash and assorted documents.
A total of US$24,000) was taken, with US$12,000 still unaccounted for.
The actions of Gballah and Ben were found to be in violation of several provisions within the LNP Administrative Instructions on Discipline and Professional Standards.
They committed Category 1 offenses, which include Abuse of Authority and Harassment of Civilians, as well as a Category 2 offense of Intimidation.
These violations contravene sections 6.1.3, 6.1.19, and 6.4(k) of the LNP Disciplinary Regulation of 2016.
The LNP emphasized its commitment to upholding the law and maintaining professional standards within its ranks.
The dismissed officers have been referred to the Crime Services Department (CSD) for further investigation, and the case will be forwarded to court following recommendations from the PSD.
This latest dismissal brings the total number of LNP officers terminated in connection with this case to three, underscoring the organization’s zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct.
The LNP reassured the public of its dedication to restoring trust and accountability within the police force, vowing to take appropriate action against any officer found in violation of the law.
As the investigation continues, the LNP calls on citizens to report any instances of police misconduct, reinforcing the importance of community involvement in ensuring justice and integrity within law enforcement.
