Liberians Are Becoming Beggars -Senator Konneh Decries

By Bill W. Cooper
Gbarpolu County Senator, Amara Konneh has expressed frustration over the overwhelming number of constituents who visit their legislative offices seeking assistance and attention.
Konneh said it is contributing to the challenges faced by senators in balancing their legislative responsibilities with the demands of their constituents, raising questions about the accessibility and accountability of elected officials in the country.
However, the senator who played a pivotal role in ensuring that President Joseph Boakai won the 2023 Presidential election on the mantra of “Rescue Mission”, has since been widely discussed over his candid comments about his constituents.
Sen. Konneh, in his Facebook post said, “We’ve been recalled from our regular recess to recast a budget projected to miss revenue targets. But the trouble is working in our Capitol Building Offices can be quite demanding due to frequent distractions from unexpected visitors.”
“Senators often find it challenging to focus on reading reports or drafting legislation as numerous visitors seeking personal assistance disrupt them. The Plenary Chamber serves as a sanctuary from external interruptions. To ensure productivity, many Senators, myself included, bring work home, aiming to strike a balance with their family life. Considering the impact on their young children, one can only imagine the toll it takes on those with young families,” he said.
The Gbarpolu County Senator added, “These are the behind-the-scenes sacrifices and struggles that often go unnoticed by our constituents and the general public. Our goal is to make you informed citizens.”
Meanwhile, the Senator’s accusations have since ignited a debate among the public, with some questioning the validity of his claims and others defending his right to express his frustrations and concerns.
Critics have also accused Sen. Konneh of being out of touch with the needs and concerns of the people he represents, arguing that accessibility and responsiveness to constituents are fundamental aspects of being an elected official.
On the other hand, supporters of Konneh highlighted the challenges faced by senators in managing the demands of their constituents while also focusing on their legislative work.
They argue that senators need time and space to make informed decisions and address critical issues facing the country, and that the constant interruptions from visitors can impede their ability to do so effectively.
Prince Toe, in his post said, “I understand where Senator Konneh is coming from, and it is important for our senators to have the time and space to focus on their work without constant interruptions.”
On the contrary, another Facebook user, Marie Nyanabo, posted, “I think Senator Konneh’s comments are misguided because it is crucial for our senators to be available and accessible to the people they represent.”
“And more besides, if they are not willing to listen to our concerns and feedbacks, then what is the point of having elected officials in office? Worst of it, he is saying this only because he doesn’t want to give back to his constituents,” she added.
