The National Housing Authority (NHA) in partnership with Habitat for Humanity have dedicated “a recycled bin” to the people of Peace Island Community in Monrovia.
Speaking at a special event hosted by residents of the community, the NHA Managing Director, Celia Cuffy Brown lauded the residents of Peace Island for their far-sightedness and persuasiveness in their approach to get the bin in their community.
Cutting the ribbon, Madam Cuffy Brown further said, the instrumentality of the residents led them to benefit from the construction of RC-Bin. She also lauded the Mayor of Monrovia, Jefferson T. Koijee and Habitat for Humanity for efforts extended to have the RC-Bin constructed in Peace Island.
“Habitat for Humanity; you have to fasten your seat belt because this initiative will be an indelible one in the country,” Madam Cuffy Brown stated.
For his part, the Mayor of the City of Monrovia, Jefferson Koijee on revealing the RC-Bin carved with “Marble Stone” lauded the residents of Peace Island, adding that with the construction of the RC-Bin, there is a new sense of feeling amongst them.
He said, the decision the residents made toward the construction of the bin was the right one. “The decision you made is why we, the policymakers are here to ensure that we ease some of the difficulties the community is faced with,” he stated.
Earlier, Matthew N’dote of Habitat for Humanity who gave the overview of the project narrated that the purpose of the project came from the people of Peace Island Community who he said informed his organization that since the founding of the community in 2004, the community has not been able to find a solution to manage their wastes.
He further stated that based on that, Habitat and NHA designed a plan to support a project to construct RC-Bin. “We realized we could not implement the project alone, so we brought in Monrovia City Corporation,” he stated.
He further disclosed that the project was funded by partners, with NHA taking the lead in a process that provided great teamwork, adding that the preparations to the project was done by the training of community waste collectors, with MCC providing support for the community to develop bylaws for the first time ever in the history of Liberia.
