Benita Urey Pledges Support To Liberia’s Female Amputee National Team Ahead of World Cup

Benita Urey, the Chief Executive officer (CEO) and President of Shaita Angels Football Club, one of Liberia’s leading female football clubs, has assured the National Female Amputees Football Team of her unwavering support ahead of the inaugural Women’s Amputee World Cup scheduled for November.
Urey visited the team’s training ground early Saturday, expressing her commitment to easing their financial burdens and advocating for their cause.
In her remarks to the media, Urey emphasized the urgent need for more support for the Female Amputees National Team, drawing parallels to the support historically given to Liberia’s senior male national team.
“It is clear that more needs to be done. We have seen what our male national team has achieved on the international stage with the right backing, and it’s time to extend that same level of support to our female amputees,” Urey stated.
The CEO highlighted her intentions to actively lobby for sponsorships, both within her company and from other stakeholders, to ensure the team is well-prepared for the upcoming World Cup.
She acknowledged the limited funding currently available but stressed the importance of collective effort among football stakeholders to supplement governmental support.
“We cannot always wait on the government to make the changes we want to see. If we, as stakeholders, take the right steps, it may inspire the government to follow suit. It is about coming together to support these resilient women who have something valuable to offer,” Urey said.
She also spoke passionately about the need to change societal perceptions of individuals living with disabilities, particularly women. She urged all Liberians to embrace and support their fellow citizens regardless of their physical conditions.
“These women are not defined by their disabilities. They are people who deserve the same opportunities as anyone else. We must see them for who they are, being strong, capable Liberians who are making us proud.”
The Shaita Angels FC President further called on all Liberians to rally behind the National Female Amputees Team, noting that many, including herself, were only now learning about the team’s existence.
“Educating the public about what these women are capable of is the first step in garnering more support. I feel privileged to be here and to contribute to empowering women in Liberia, especially those living with disabilities,” Urey added.
According to many of those associated with the amputee football body, Beneta Urey’s visit marks a significant step in promoting inclusivity and support for women in sports, particularly those overcoming physical challenges.
Her pledge to lobby for additional resources and raise awareness about the team underscores her dedication to advancing women’s football in Liberia. As the Women’s Amputee World Cup approaches, Urey’s involvement is expected to boost the team’s morale and open doors for further support from the broader community.
