The Minister of Internal Affairs, Francis Nyumalin, has expressed frustration over the lack of participation from local leaders in crucial development initiatives.
The meeting however served as a wake-up call for local government officials, signaling that their involvement is not just desired but necessary for the success of Liberia’s development agenda.
The meeting was held on Wednesday August 28, 2024, in Monrovia, brought together USAID Mission Director Jim Wright and other key stakeholders, to review ongoing development efforts in Liberia, highlighting both the successes and the significant challenges facing these initiatives.
Making remarks, Minister Nyumalin acknowledged the substantial contributions of USAID and other partners towards Liberia’s development, he voiced serious concerns about the absence of local government officials, including county superintendents, in key programs organized by USAID.
According to him, this lack of engagement, has alarmed the U.S. Embassy, raising concerns about the impact on ongoing and future projects, particularly in Foya and Zorzor.
Minister Nyumalin stated that, the success of these initiatives hinges on the active participation of local government officials.
“Their absence not only undermines the efforts of our international partners but also jeopardizes the benefits these programs are meant to bring to our communities,” he said.
He urged local leaders to take a more proactive role in planning and executing these initiatives, emphasizing that their involvement is crucial for achieving the desired outcomes.
He underscored the need for greater collaboration between national and local authorities to ensure the effectiveness of development projects.
Meanwhile, Minister Nyumalin reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for collaboration, he noted that, more efforts are needed from local leaders to meet the expectations of international partners.
Minister Nyumalin however called for a renewed focus on coordination and communication between all stakeholders adding that they cannot afford to let these opportunities slip away.
“It is imperative that local leaders step up and fully engage in these development efforts to build a stronger, more resilient Liberia,” he concluded.
