Ailing Immigration Officer Abandoned?

By Bill W. Cooper
A dedicated officer of the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS), Sam Lomax, has decried that he feels neglected by the government as he is currently battling a Spinal cord complication.
Mr. Lomax, 57, rose to the rank of Colonel and served as Border Commander of LIS through his journey in public service for over 32 years.
Colonel Lomax in an interview with OK FM narrated that he was diagnosed of spinal cord complication by Liberian doctors, a situation that has left him paralyzed from the waist.
However, doctors have since advised him to seek advanced medical treatment in Ghana but the LIS officer is currently bedridden due to the lack of US$13,000 that is required to facilitate his treatment to travels abroad.
Mr. Lomax, with tears pulling from his eyes also noted that despite series of engagements and his years of service to the force, the government through LIS has failed to aid his condition.
With no financial support from the government and limited access to proper healthcare, the officer’s situation has quickly deteriorated but, with optimism, he expressed that he will get well and return to continue serving his country.
He is calling on other humanitarian organization, the offices of the President, Speaker and Senate Pro-Tempore for financial assistance to help him undergo the recommended surgery in Ghana.
Meanwhile, LIS Deputy Commissioner for Administration, Elijah Rufus, in response said the institution is fully aware of Colonel Lomax’s condition describing him as a dedicated officer.
Deputy Commissioner Rufus however disclosed that the Service does not have funding currently to aid the officer but promised that engagements are underway, and added that the sick officer will be duly informed in the coming days.
As the officer continues to battle his illness alone, his story serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by many public servants in country and a need to invest huge portions of our budget into the health sector.
His situation further highlights the urgent need for the government to prioritize the health and well-being of its employees, especially those who have dedicated their lives to serving their country.
But in the midst of this crisis, Col. Lomax story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of standing up for those in need and holding the government accountable for its actions.
The pressure is also mounting on the government to take immediate action and provide the necessary support and assistance, as all eyes of the nation are watching to see if the officer will finally receive the help he so rightfully deserves.
