Paynesville Celebrates Debut At CAF, Watanga Suffers Defeat

Paynesville Football Clubs has made their debut to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), inter-club competition with a celebrational victory against struggling Cameroonian Cup Champions Fovu Club de Boham.
Both teams met in the first leg of the preliminary qualifiers of the CAF confederations cup on Sunday August 18, 2024 at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in the city of Paynesville.
After more than 30 minutes delay in the match due to conflicting reports that the visiting team players were incomplete to start a regular football match, the match official called the game to start with the Cameroonian side playing with eight men against Paynesville 11 men.
Adding the condition of the visitors to Liberia’s advantage, Mark Paye came through in the first half with a brace despite the missing of several goal opportunities by the frontline attackers of Paynesville FC.
In the second half, Lawrence Kumeh and Dan Weah were charged and move by fans to extend the scoreline with a goal each to put coach Dominic Savege and his boys ahead pending the return leg of the first preliminaries.
The second leg of the qualifier is expected to be played in a space of one week.
At such time, Paynesville Football Club will have to defend their home victory while playing away to win on aggregate in order to advance to the second stage of the preliminary qualifiers.
At the same interclub continental competition, Liberia’s representatives to the CAF champions league suffered a 2-0 defeat to MC Algiers at the Nelson Mendela Sports stadium in Algeria at the first leg of the CAF champions league preliminary qualifiers.
The first leg loosed by the Liberian league champion was Watatanga’s home match but could not play in Liberia for reasons undisclosed by the team management. They arranged to have the two legs of their qualifiers played in the home of their opponents in a single week period.
With a first leg deficit, Watanga will play the second leg in Algeria during the coming days with hopes to overturn the aggregate score in their favor for a spot in the next stage of the African champions league.
