Police Gives Motorcycles In Restricted Zones More Time

By Precious D. Freeman
The Liberia National Police (LNP) has announced a two-month extension in the motorcycle restricted zones, pushing the deadline from August 15, 2024, to October 15, 2024.
This extension follows an appeal from the Federation of Motorcycles and Tricycles Unions of Liberia, made during a meeting at LNP Headquarters on August 6, 2024.
The extension aims to accommodate concerns raised by motorcyclists and tricyclists while continuing the government’s effort to curb accidents and criminal activities associated with motorbikes.
However, the ‘No Go Zone’ policy, which restricts motorcycle and tricycle operations in specific areas of central Monrovia, remains in effect and under this policy, motorcyclists and tricycle riders are barred from the restricted zones around the clock.
The revised measures, however, allow motorcyclists to operate on principal streets in Monrovia with several conditions. These include mandatory registration and insurance coverage, as well as limits on the number of passengers only one per motorcycle, all wearing helmets.
Additionally, riders must wear reflective jackets and protective shoes while Kehkeh (tricycle) operators must also be registered, insured, and can carry a maximum of three passengers, alongside holding a valid driver’s license.
The LNP urges all motorcyclists and tricyclists to comply with these safety measures. This policy update was coordinated with Vice President Jeremiah Koung and has received input from both private and commercial motorcyclists, including journalists, ensuring broad adherence to the new regulations.
The LNP continues to prioritize public safety while balancing the operational needs of motorcyclists and tricyclists.
