Stakeholders Brainstorm On Liberia’s Csw Report

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, with support from United Nations Women in Liberia ( UN Women), the Swedish Embassy and other partners held a one-day stakeholders’ meeting on the status of women in Liberia.
The meeting was held at the Corina Hotel in Sinkor, Monrovia.
Speaking at the forum, Rivercess County District #2 Representative and Chair of Women’s Legislative Caucus, Rosana Schaack , said Women legislators are working to promote effective participation of women in leadership and peacebuilding and other initiatives.
She added that “Quietly, there is a global movement growing: a movement of local, regional and international civil society alliances, which have identified the inclusion of women and gender perspectives in all aspects of the society.”
Rep. Schaack also called on the Government of Liberia (GOL) to see the need to revamp the Country’s only DNA test machine to aid in the investigation and prosecution of rape cases.
She said with this, the Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Gender , the Women Legislative Caucus, among others will sustain the fight against SGBV and the prosecution of murderers and others accused of rape.
For her part, Deputy Minister Alice Johnson-Howard of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MOGCSP) thanked the UN for supporting Liberia’s participation in the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).
“Liberia’s participation in the CSW is an opportunity to increase advocacy for the elimination of violence against women and girls and provide a safe space for them,” she said.
For this year’s CSW that ran from March 11-March 22, 2019, Liberia’s delegation to the CSW comprises 113 persons, including 73 government officials and 40 civil society organizations and NGOs.
The CSW is an instrument that seeks to promote women’s rights, document the reality of their lives throughout the world and shape global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women.
The meeting discussed Liberia’s report on the 63rd CSW which was held in New York, United States of America in March this year.
Participants shared their experiences and discussed lessons learned for the next CSW.
Participants included representatives from the Ministries of Justice, Internal Affairs, MOGCSP, as well as Women’s Legislative Caucus which included Rosana Schaack, District I, Rivercess and Maima Briggs Mensah, District I, Bong County.
