Serious cloud said to be hanging over Acting Deputy Central Bank of Liberia Governor, Nyemadi Pearson’s confirmation due to what Senators describe as constitutional violations.
The Senate Standing Committee on Banking and Currency cited both the Acting Deputy Governor and the Executive Governor designate J. Aloysius Tarlue for Public Confirmation hearing in the plenary session of the Liberian Senate on Thursday but prior to Administering the oath, the Committee deferred Nyemadi Pearson’s confirmation hearing to an unspecific date following an intense murmurings amongst Senators over her confirmation.
According to our legislative sources, the confrontation over the Madam Pearson’s confirmation started in Committee’s rooms when her CV was submitted to individual Senator before her appearance for confirmation.
Our sources say Madam Pearson who is acting in Charles Sirleaf’s position should not be confirmed for the position she is vying for which is not a vacant position.
According a legislative source, the Executive submitted Madam Pearson’s letter to be confirmed prior to the legislature but was delayed due to her visit with the President.
A lawmaker who begged for anonymity said; “Her name was submitted by the President to be confirmed before we went for legislative break. We called her for confirmation but she asked for excuse because she had traveled with the President. Confirming her is not an issue. We have reservations with her nomination for confirmation which we had flagged with leadership. Our reservations border on the post that she wants to be confirmed for is a tenure position occupied by a Liberian whose tenure has been expired or dismissed”.
“Some of us asked our friends who are lawyers to enlighten us and were told that doing so, will be a flagrant violation of the constitution. Charles Sirleaf’s tenure has not expired. The executive can nominate her for confirmation if only Charles Sirleaf resigns or be dismissed by government if he is culpable of the crimes against him,” he said.
Madam Pearson who is acting in Charles Sirleaf’s position initially served as Managing Director at the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC) and was appointed later by President George Weah as CBL Deputy for operations.
