Former Deputy Minister Challenges UL Graduates

By Bill W. Cooper

The former Deputy Gender Minster Lucia Massalee Yallah has challenged hundred prospective graduates of the University of Liberia (UL) and all members of the Alumni Association of the University of Liberia (AAUL) to help mitigate the challenges confronting the University.

Madam Yallah, who is also a former graduate of the UL and a member of the AAUL alarmed that the UL with great zeal, is trying to overcome its challenges but wants all prospective graduates as well as the AAUL members to put all hands on deck as they are the “light in darkness” in accordance with the institution’s motto Lux In Tenebris.

Alumna Yallah made the call over the weekend on December 6, 2019, when she served as guest speaker during the AAUL 2019 homecoming day of the UL 100th graduating class of 2019 at the auditorium of the UL main campus in Monrovia.

Speaking on the topic “keep the light shining in darkness,” Madam Yallah noted that if the University is about to celebrate its 100 graduation ceremony, that means, the institution has graduated thousands of skilled professionals who she said have provided and continue to provide the best services to the government, the business community, the private sector and the world over.

The former deputy minister then asked “where are the thousands and thousands that have walked through the halls of this great University?”, emphasizing that the UL needs them more than ever before, as they as alumni of the University need to organize and continue to build an effective association that is second to none.

“The association has an important role to play in making sure that the UL achieves its all-important 2030, as a reputable institution depends on good results, cool sexual activities, healthy environment and investment, as such, factors which require support, encouragement as well as bringing strength and expansion to any institution’s reputation and progress is an effective Alumni Association (AA),” Alumna Yallah explained.

Additionally, she said, “With a strong AA, members feel obliged and honored to return a favor and success they acquired while at their Alma Mater as the Alma Mater gets the benefits and starts growing unanimously, both academically, administratively and spiritually at the national and international level.”

Alumna Yallah alluded that due to the limited help from alumna toward the association and numerous challenges confronting the AA, they are finding it very difficult to give back to the UL, while at the same time urged the AAUL members and the soon-to-be alumna to always remember their past for the growth of the country.

Receiving the soon-to-be alumnus, the president of the AAUL, James Davis cautioned the prospective of the UL to always support the AAUL, adding that if they can do it through many ways like; cash to the department, a donation to help clean the UL building as well as a donation to help paint the TH50 building which he said to be the largest class ever in the history of the UL, stressing that they need to develop an innovative way to the institution.

He added that the AAUL has a big dream to build a multi-purpose first class center, as it cannot be successful if they as alumnus do not contribute towards it, indicating that they as alumna want to make sure that the UL has added resources to support what has been given by national government.
