The Ambassador At-Large for Global Criminal Justice, Beth Van Schaack, says creating a War and Economic Crimes Court is not about laying blame but about ensuring that Liberians can move forward into the future with complete and true history.
Amb. Schaack made the remark via video regarding the signing of the Executive Order for the War and Economic Crime Court by President Joseph Boakai.
Amb. Schaack emphasized that the signing of the executive order to establish the office of a War and Economic Crimes Court for Liberia is a significant step towards ensuring justice for crimes committed during the civil war era.
“This move has been long-awaited by Liberians who have suffered from the impunity that has overshadowed their lives for over two decades,” Amb. Schaack disclosed.
“I have been inspired by the unwavering determination of the Liberian people to seek justice, and I want to congratulate President Joseph Boakai and his team at the Executive Mansion for their efforts,” she recalled
She also applauded the civil society advocates, members of the Liberian Bar, victims, survivors, and members of the Legislature who have worked tirelessly to keep the dream of justice alive.
She stressed that it takes courage to acknowledge the past, adding “I appreciate your recognition that the country’s future will be brighter and more prosperous only when it appropriately acknowledges its history.”
She disclosed that the US Embassy in Monrovia, and other partners in the United States Government, are ready to work with Liberia to ensure the success of the court.
She stated further that it is essential to build a society in which the rule of law will flourish and survivors of the worst crimes known to humankind are treated with dignity. “Together, we can create a brighter future for Liberia,” the US envoy expressed.
“As we take these courageous next steps, we are thrilled to partner with you and welcome others within the diplomatic community in Monrovia to join us in this endeavor,” Amb. Schaack reiterated.
She added, “Congratulations to all who have worked for this significant achievement, your bravery and honesty are truly commendable. We echo President Boakai’s signing speech and urge you to remain firm in your stand against injustice and impunity. We look forward to celebrating with you soon in Liberia.”
