In an effort to alleviate the struggle citizens normally go through in order to get to their various destinations, the Managing Director of the National Transit Authority (NTA), Herbie Teconbla McCauley has disclosed that the government and people of India over the weekend donated 45 transit buses to the government to ease transportation inconvenience in the country.
He said that the buses are in fulfillment of the Indian government’s support towards the government Pro-poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development (PAPD), stating that it was also in line with the President’s call made to the Indian Prime Minister sometimes in 2018 to support his government’s agenda, as the buses arrived in the country on Friday, November 29, 2019 at the National Port Authority (NPA).
Making the disclosure at the Ministry of Information (MICAT) regular press briefing, the NTA boss among many things narrated the arrival of two containers with spare parts and the training of two senior mechanics of NTA workshop in the India as well as a stationer of one senior mechanic from Tata is in Liberia for the period of one year to ease in building the capacity of mechanics in the NTA workshop were also part of the promise made by the Indian government.
He added that currently negotiations are underway to fulfill the latter portion of the promise, emphasizing that the Board of Directors and the management team of the NTA are aware of the strategic nature of the intervention from the President and people of the country.
“In support of pillar two of the government PAPD developmental agenda which speaks of job creation and empowerment, we from the angle of the NTA are instituting measures that will enhance the longevity of the buses and guarantee the repairing of the buses for the people of Liberia,” MD McCauley indicated.
Meanwhile, the NTA boss has revealed plans that the NTA is now partnering with numerous Senegalese IT specialists to introduce what he called “electronic ticketing payment platform” in addition to the manual payment system. He stressed that it will increase transparency in the transit revenue collection, as the partnership agreement will also include the installation of remote monitoring devices on the buses.
Director McCauley alluded that the establishment of a central monitoring hob on the main compound of the NTA is also in the purview, adding, “There was never a time that government received this amount of buses in the history of this country as we decided to digitize the entire ticketing system of the NTA because it’s going to have transparency and leakages, which has been one of the NTA major challenges in terms of generating our capacity of the actual revenue we need to have.”
He further stated that the NTA Will also introduce a card system in the buses as well as a Mobile Money platform to be able to pay via the platform to refill ones card that will be used on the buses, averring that the NTA will decentralize the 45 plus 5 old which is equivalent to 50 buses in eight counties in the country.
