The Liberia Water and Sewage Corporation (LWSC) employees last week staged a protest demanding several salary arrears and allowances owed them by the Corporation.They told this paper that they have been patient for some time now but that they can no longer bear it as the Management has remained insensitive to their plight and the only option is to protest.
On Friday, November 22, several aggrieved employees of the Corporation gathered before the compound to stage a peaceful protest over delay in the payment of their five months each salary arrears owed them by government.
The workers’ action drew the attention of central government and the public due to the refusal of government to settle the employees’ seven months salaries and transportation allowances.
Spokesman C. Abayemi Cassell, Secretary General of the LWSC Workers Union told the media that the management has been inhumane to workers of the Corporation.
He said the Management has been giving them misleading information as it relates to their salaries and allowances. “This month makes it exactly five months we have not taken pay; and seven months we have not gotten transportation allowance and every day they tell workers come to work if; you do not come, you will be marked absent,” he added.
The employees also complained about the lack of tools and safety gears to enable them carry on their assigned tasks and responsibilities void of hindrances.
Meanwhile, Deputy Managing Director for Technical Services of LWSC), Dan Saryee, has tendered in his resignation. Sources told this paper that his action was based on alleged unfavorable working condition.
When contacted yesterday, Mr. Sayeh, a former social society advocate, confirmed his resignation since this month, but declined to comment further, as his communication has been sent to the President.
