Health Workers Stage Demonstrations In Nimba

By Solomon T. Gaye

Health workers at the Ganta Methodist Hospital have staged a go-slow action in demand of salary and other working benefits.

Speaking on behalf of health workers, the workers union president, Gabriel Tounzia, told reporters that no health worker will report to duty until the nurses’ three months’ salaries are paid.

Tounzia threatened that patients who are already undergoing medical treatment at ER, OB, maternity, children, women, and male wards would remain at the hospital and will be catered to by the nurses.

“We want to take this time to inform the administration of the hospital that we have reached an agreement to remain home until bishop arrives here to settle our demands,” Tounzia asserted.

On February 16, 2024, health workers assigned at various sections of the hospital deserted their posts in demands of their salaries, better working condition, job benefits, among other things.

Speaking on behalf of the Methodist Hospital, administrator, Allen Zomonway, appealed to the health workers to return to work for what he termed as ‘peace’s sake’.

“This is a serious case. We are discussing with you; the Methodist bishop is informed about what is going on here. Please return to work, we will try to settle your salary issue,” Zomonway pleaded.

During a normal routine at the hospital on February 19, 2024, over thirty health workers, along with various section heads, were in meeting with the hospital administration trying to find a common ground to the situation.

Speaking on behalf of the Nimba County Health Team, Dr. Nettie Doe disclosed that the action leading to the demonstrations has claimed the attention of the county health team, noting, “We all are health workers. I take note of your concern and will investigate the case.”
