Monrovians Caution Mayor-Designate

By S. Siapha Mulbah

Residents of Monrovia have cautioned the City Mayor of Monrovia-designate, John Charuk Siafa, to prioritize the city ordinances and cleaning up of the city upon confirmation by the Liberian Senate.

John Charuk Siafa was nominated by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai on Thursday, February 1, 2024, to serve as the new Mayor to the city government. His nomination is currently pending confirmation in the coming days by the Senate.

After his nomination, citizens have started expressing confidence in the nominee, calling on him to prioritize an effective cleaning up strategy in order to put the city in good ordinance for the safety and comfort of its residents.

Elizabeth Vandi said it is important to have a clean, green, and safe city and recruiting the young people around Monrovia to lead a thorough initiative that will give the capital a face of attraction.

Vandi said she believes that the confirmation of the nominee is sure because he has the expertise of giving Monrovia the freshness it has been lacking since the ascendancy of the immediate former Mayor, Jefferson Koijee.

As a volunteering supervisor to the inauguration cleanup campaign team, she advised the nominee to seek the interest of a competent work force that will be committed to doing what is required to make the city clean and green.

“There is a good number of young people in the communities that want to work to clean the city like we did with the inauguration cleanup. I am recommending that the new Mayor recruits some of these same volunteers to keep the city clean,” she said.

Jerry Kanneh explained that the failure of the former Mayor in keeping Monrovia clean and in order, resulted from the lack of an effective cleaning team.

According to him, the mayor needs to get involved in every step along the way so that his deputies and other employees can know that sanitation is a majority priority area of the new administration.

“Madam Mary Broh was only able to maintain this very city because she went to the field and led every effort to have it done. This new Mayor will have to take her leadership at the city hall as an example,” he added. Kanneh asserted that giving others opportunity to work under the city government is a key factor, and ensuring that they are paid well and on time will make the employees dedicated to providing services, unlike the case of the past six years.
