Peace talks between the county administrators, aggrieved workers and the management of Arcelor Mittal gear towards finding a common ground have ended in Sanniquellie, Nimba County.The aggrieved workers told the County Inspector, Reginald Mehn, that the Management of Arcelor Mittal dismissed them illegally without notice and replaced them with a new batch of workers without any regards for the Labor Law.
Arcelor Mittal Company dismissed or downsized over 800 workers; many of them whom are Nimbaians and replaced them with new workers thereby creating serious hardship on residents in the county.
The aggrieved workers recently threatened to stage demonstration by blocking the main railways along with their families thereby stopping the smooth operations of trains in the county until the company or government addresses their plight.
After several hours of consultation with hundreds of aggrieved workers held at the city hall in Ganta, the meeting presided over by Mr. Mehn was fruitful as all agreed that the aggrieved workers should not block the railways until the discussions from the peace talk is settled.
Following the discussion, the spokesman of the aggrieved workers, Kinston Nyanlebo, said 363 workers was dismissed while 369 contractors who were downsized by the company without the knowledge of the government and replaced with new workers were in violation of the Labor Law .
Kinston Nyanlebo further said, many of the workers who were dismissed have document to disprove that the action carried out by the company was not in line with Labor Law and emphasized that violence is the only lesson the company best understands to answer to their demand or to reinstate the dismissed workers with immediate effect.
Meanwhile, speaking to a team of journalists in Sanniquellie, County Inspector Mehn said the Company has given a 14-day ultimatum to the company to respond to the ruling made by the county’s administration in order to reinstate those that have document.
