The Lone Star of Liberia have arrived in Accra Ghana to honor an international friendly with the Black Stars of Ghana today, Tuesday, September 12, 2023.
Lone Star departed Morocco Saturday, September 9, after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) postponed the final African Cup of Nations qualifier match between Liberia and Morocco, due to the devastating earthquake that occurred in Marrakech a day prior to the fixture.
The sad natural disaster led to the loss of at least 2,000 lives, with hundreds of injuries, according to international reports up to press time. Under said circumstances, the Confederation decided to postpone the match to a time indefinite, mourning loss of lives in the Central African country.
A release issued by CAF said, “CAF has agreed to postpone the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023 Qualifier match between Morocco and Liberia, following the earthquake in Morocco which resulted in more than 800 people losing their lives and hundreds injured.”
CAF expressed condolences to the families who lost their loved ones, the Fédération Royale de Football, and the people of Morocco, stating that there be a moment of silence before the start of all the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023 Qualifier matches on Saturday and Sunday, September 9 and 10, 2023, to acknowledge and honor the people who lost their lives during the tragedy in Morocco.
The Red, White, and Blue national team boys, under the watch of Head Coach, Ansumane Keita, will take on their Ghanaian counterparts at the Accra Sports Stadium in the city of Accra. The match is to boost the preparation of Liberia for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in November, against Equatorial Guinea and Malawi.
As for the Black Stars of Ghana, the showpiece enhances the preparation for the 2023 Africa Cup of nations, expected to take place in Ivory Coast in early 2024.
Ghana qualified over the weekend for the next round of the continental competition from group E of the qualifier rounds, with 12 points, topping Angola, Central Africa Republic, and Madagascar.
