The Board Of Directors, Executive Director, and members of the Liberia First Super Political Action Committee (LiftSPAC), based in the diaspora and in Liberia, are appalled by the incident which occurred on July 19, 2023, when a group of peaceful Liberians went out to express their dissatisfaction on the spate of corruption in the Liberian government and its devastating impact on the Liberian people.
In that incident, some individuals threw rocks at those who had peacefully and constitutionally gathered to make their concerns known.
LiftSPAC makes it unequivocally clear that the behavior on the part of the rock throwers was distasteful, callous, and unacceptable. Violence from any individual or group must be rejected and condemned at every level of our society stressing, “We know the destruction that violence and lawless behaviors have caused our nation and people.”
It affirmed that there should be no place in our community for anyone or group to engage in violent behaviors maintaining that when violent behaviors occur, all well-intentioned Liberians, especially the government, should act quickly against such vices.
LiftSPAC, a non-partisan institution, urged the Government of Liberia to be swift and prompt in condemning violence and any mob action and take immediate steps to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators.
The group said the society no longer tolerates such behaviors adding that when the government remains silent or delays its reaction in these instances, this signals complicity and a lack of willingness to punish violence and crimes.
“We thank those who participated in the demonstration or peaceful gathering for the level of maturity and peacefulness they exercised by not responding to violence with violence, despite their higher number and capacity,” the group stated.
LiftSPAC admonishes Liberians to engage in the political process with the highest level of respect and peaceful interactions.
