Journalists across Liberia are saddened by the passing, G. Naway Gumeh, the ‘Rising Star’ Award winner of the Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS).
This sad event occurred on Friday, April 21, 2023, in Gbarnga, Bong County after a brief illness.
There are already outpours of eulogies for the late Gumeh who served as an LBS newscaster and reporter.
The outgoing Chairperson of the Executive Mansion Press Corps, Dennise Nimpson, described the passing of Gumeh as a shock and called on his family to take solace in the Lord.
Before his demise, Gumeh worked for the Prime FM, the Voice of Liberia and the Liberia Broadcasting System.
Nimpson said there were many great moments shared by Gumeh including the county tour with President George M. Weah in 2022.
Meanwhile, as a result of the loss of Gumeh, the Chairperson of the Executive Mansion Press Corps, in collaboration with the leadership-elect has suspended the inauguration scheduled for April 28, 2023.
The Reporters Association of Liberia (RAL) says was in complete shock and disbelief upon receiving the news of the sudden demise Naway Gumeh which was confirmed by the ELBC late evening.
The RAL learned of the illness of the late reporter a few months ago but was advised to keep it private.
“On behalf of the reporters’ body across Liberia, allow us to offer the most profound condolences to the family, friends, and the entire journalism community across Liberia.
Indeed, the late reporter Gumeh played a big role in the media community into services he rendered through the journalism profession,” the RAL expressed.
He was very instrumental and contributed immensely in reporting series of trending information during President Weah’s county tour while serving as Executive Mansion reporter.
Before coming to Monrovia, Gumeh served as a reporter in Bong County for several institutions, including Voice of Gbartala.
The RAL notes with grief that the departed reporter was very passionate about his role in the newsroom and was actively involved in the Association’s activities.
The late Gumeh was among several other reporters awarded by the LBS Management for their exceptional performance.
RAL leader Willie Tokpah said, “Today we mourn the passing of a great personality in the Liberian reporter’s community who has left behind a powerful legacy of humility, simplicity, and dedication in the struggle for a better media community.”
Journalists have been requested to continue to mourn Gumeh by changing their profile pictures on their social media handle to black as a sign of grieve nationwide for the period of mourning.
