Delay In Jebor Arrival Raises Concern …As More Foreign Based Players Hit Town

Liberia’s preparations for the Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers heats up as more overseas based players have begun hitting the ground, but Liberians are raising concerns over the delay in the arrival of Lone Star’s captain, William Jebor and few others.

With the match set for Wednesday, at the Samuel K. Sports stadium in Paynesville, many would have expected that by this time the 13-foreign based players should already be on the ground training with the few local players who were selected to form part of the national team.

Interestingly, Liberians have started voicing their frustration over the arrival of the players in segment. Responding to news of players’ arrival, followers of the Liberia Football Association (LFA) social media page said “the game is Wednesday and they are coming in segment?”

On Monday, September 2, the local football house announced the arrival of Russian based Slyvanus Nimely, Tonia Tisdell of Cyprus Nea Salamis Famagusta and Joel Johnson of Charlotte Independence, USA. The players summed up the total of nine foreign based players already in Monrovia, with the match schedule for tomorrow.

England based Newcastle United player, Mohammed Sangare, Real Salt Lake’s Sam Johnson, Eugene Swen of Energetik-BSU, Belarus and William Jebor of Al Fujairah in United Arab Emirates are the remaining players who are yet to arrive for the Wednesday’s match.

New comer, Swedish-born midfielder Seth Hellberg is already in the country as the team has intensified training at the George Weah technical center in Careysburg outside Monrovia.

Jebor made his debut for Liberia on 26 March 2011, starting in a 2-4 loss against Cape Verde. His first international goal came on 14 June 2015, in a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Togo.

Liberians have also been expressing concern over Jebor’s fitness as the Lone Star front-man has struggled for game time since moving to his new club in the United Arab Emirates. Many had expected that since Jebor have not had sufficient game time recently, he would have been amongst the first batch of players to arrive in Liberia so as to intensify his training and also regain match fitness.

Qualifying for Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup is one of the mandates given Liberia’s newly appointed English Coach, Peter James Butler, who comes with a decent record from Botswana.

Jebor is one of Lone Star deadliest frontliners, and his presence in the absence of Anthony Laffor means a whole lot for Liberia. Jebor scored a hat-trick in a 3–1 win at Guinea-Bissau on October 13, 2015, after scoring another one in the first leg. And he also scored another hat-trick against Djibouti in the African Cup of Nations Qualifier. On March 29, 2016, he scored another hat-trick in a CAF 2017 qualification match in Monrovia, Liberia, between Djibouti and Liberia, becoming the only Liberian senior national football team player to score a hat-trick more than once in an international tournament.

Liberians now refer to him as the “Victorious Boy”, “A True Son Of The Soil”, and “The Striker.” He is considered by some to be the most important player of the current generation of Liberia’s football.

Those invited for the Lone Star versus Sierra Leone match include, defenders: Joel Johnson Alajarin (Charlotte Independence, United States), Eugene Swen (Energetik-BSU, Belarus) and Teah Dennis (Minerva Punjab, India)

Midfielders: Mohammed Sangare (Newcastle United under-23, England), Oscar Murphy Dorley (Slovan Liberec, Czech Republic), Seth Kanteh Hellberg (IK Brage, Sweden), Allen Njie (Grasshopper Club, Switzerland), Sylvanus Nimely (Spartak Moscow 2,), Terrance Tisdell (Baroka, South Africa) and Tonia Tisdell (Nea Salamis Famagusta, Cyprus)

Forwards: William Jebor (Al Fujairah, United Arab Emirates), Kpah Sherman (PKNS, Malaysia) and Sam Johnson (Real Salt Lake, United States).

Meanwhile, the Sierra Leonean delegation has arrived in Liberia ahead of the Wednesday’s international match. Musa Tombo Kamara, Sierra Leone premier league 2019 top goal scorer who had a successful tryout with Swedish club, Trellesborg FF and signed a three-year deal, but opted to terminate his contract and return home because of the cold weather in Sweden is among home-based players who were selected in the Sierra Leone team.

Deplorable SKD Pitch

In another development, it has emerged that the SKD sports stadium pitch is in a deplorable state at the moment. According to sources, Lone Star newly appointed coach has also expressed disappointment over the state of the playing pitch. Liberia’s national team has been holding a closed door training session at the Weah’s technical center but due to the pitch condition they are yet to conduct one of their practice sessions at the SDK sports stadium.

The poor state of the pitch has been attributed to the recent July 26, independence celebration and a just ended graduation ceremony where tents and performance structures were mounted in the center of the field leaving it in a deplorable state. Writes D. Webster Cassell

Along with every little thing that appears to be building inside this particular area, a significant percentage of opinions are relatively exciting. Nonetheless, I appologize, but I do not subscribe to your whole plan, all be it radical none the less. It seems to everybody that your opinions are not totally validated and in simple fact you are generally yourself not thoroughly convinced of the point. In any event I did appreciate looking at it.
