Census Result Troubles Senate

Senate Pro-tempore, Albert Chie has constituted an Ad-hoc Committee to work with the House of Representatives to determine whether or not the recent result of the country’s Population and Housing Census is applicable for the 2023 Presidential and Legislative Elections as Liberians are poised to go to the polls to elect 73 new Representatives, 15 new Senators, and a President to steer the affairs of the country for the next six years on October 10, 2023.

Recently, the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-information Services (LISGIS) announced the provisional result of the Population and Housing Census standing at about 5,248,621 constituting an increase of 50 percent of the 2008 Census.

The Pro-temp’s action is apparently the delay by (LISGIS) to have timely announced the Census result ahead of the elections which is less than nine months ahead consistent with article 80 (d) and (e) of the 1986 Constitution of the Republic of Liberia.

Accordingly, those appointed are, Senator Numene Bartekwa of Grand Kru County as Chairman; Senator Saah Joseph of Montserrado County; Senator James Tornorlah of Margibi County; Senator Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence of Grand Bassa County. Others are Senators Prince Moye of Bong County and Joseph K. Jallah of Lofa.
