Legislature To Enact More Laws In Ten Days …Proposition Made To Avoid The Holding Of By-Elections

Senate Pro-tempore, Albert Chie, has assured President George Weah that the Legislature will process most of the bills that are pending before its Legislative break which takes effect as of August 31, 2019. This means, members of the Legislature are expected to process most of the bills languishing within the corridors of the Legislature within last ten working days as promised by Senator Chie.
The law also gives the President the absolute power to issue a proclamation for members of the Legislature to continue sessions for a given period if there are still urgent unfinished legislative work.
The Senate Pro-temp made these assertions on Saturday during the close of the two-day Presidential and Legislative Retreat held at the Farmington Hotel in Margibi County.
Following the climax of the meeting, the convener of the gathering, President Weah, described the retreat as successful and urged lawmakers to work in the interest of their country.
He reminded those in attendance that, that gathering was intended to appeal to members of 54th Legislature to pass vital legislations some of which include, the annulment of by-elections; the Dual Citizenship Bill; reduction in tenures of senators, representatives including the reduction in the President’s tenure.
The 29 pending propositions included the Amendment of Article 28 which provides for Dual Citizenship of persons who are Negroes or of Negroes decent.
The provisions are Proposition #2, to amend Article 45 to provide for filling vacancies created by deaths, resignation, expulsion or otherwise senators; Proposition #3, to amend Article 46 to provide for the reduction in the tenure of senators term to seven and Proposition #4 to amend Article 48 to provide for the reduction in the tenure of Representatives with of proposal of five years.
Others are Proposition #5 to amend Article 49 to provide for the election of a Speaker, Deputy Speaker and other officers of the House of Representatives, with a proposal of five years; Proposition #6 to amend Article for the reduction in the tenure of the president. Proposal, the President shall hold power for a term of five years commencing at noon on the third working Monday in January of the year following the election and Proposition #7, to amend Article 66 to provide for the establishment of regional intermediary Appellate Courts. Proposal: the Legislature shall make no law nor create any exceptions as would deprive the Supreme Court of any of the powers granted herein and others.
