Setback To Bassa In County Meet …As Riverscess 1st Defeat Takes Them Home

It appears to be one of the worst seasons in County Meet history for the Bassa-speaking tribes in Liberia as both Rivercess and Grand Bassa Counties bow to defeat in the quarterfinal round.

Rivercess County, who put out a very good performance in the preliminary stage of the tournament and qualified as one of the two teams with nine points, took her way home Saturday afternoon when they met stiff resistance from the tournament’s defending champion.

Nimba displayed supremacy over the Cesstos Boys from the start of the 120 minutes showpiece even though pressure mounted on both sides to defend the possibility to have made it to the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex.

From an early lead, Isaac Dayweah and Emmanuel Sieh put the Boys from the Nimba Mountain over Riverscess with two goals but one was pulled back by Archie Sayon of Rivercess ending the first half 2-1, but a last minute strike from the 18 yard box from Delton Kollie restored the hope for Cestos City and extended the game time to additional 30 minutes according to the rules of the game.

The two goals at peace were separated during the extra time after Rivercess misused many chances and Nimba with just one more chance converted to; was sufficient to make Sanniqulie and other cities along with villages and towns across Nimba the first to book a spot in the semifinals.

In the next match, Lofa County as well left no part of the pitch untouched while taking on Grand Bassa County to finally send the Bassa people home all together in football and kickball.

Bassa after redeeming James Tarpeh of Lofa early minutes header won the first half 2-1 but became victim of defeat when the 88-minute goal scored by Lawrence Kumeh from the Wologizi boys cancelled their lead to an equalizer.

Another early goal from James Tarpeh in the start of extra time confirmed Lofa’s qualifier to the semifinals and caused the Bassa Boys to join their girls on the kickball team to take their way back to Buchanan Fairground.

Lofa has lost no game since the start of this year’s National County Meet in football and kickball while Rivercess only lost a game against Nimba County in both kickball and football to leave the city.
