Gender Ministry To Create More Opportunities For Girls

Liberia’s Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MGCSP), Williametta E. Saydee-Tarr has renewed Government’s unflinching commitment to creating more opportunities so as to improve the career of young women and girls across the country.
Min. Saydee-Tarr made the comment on Tuesday, Augustus 6 at program marking the official opening of the 5th National Young Women and Girls Conference held at the MVTC in Jacob town, Paynesville.
In her remarks, the MGCSP boss reaffirmed the Weah led-government assurance of providing basic support to young women and girls which according to her will assist them in accelerating and exploring their respective potential.
The two-day National Young Women & Girls Confab which is being held under the theme: “Building the Future of Liberian Women” is an annual gathering of young women and girls with participants drawn from the 15 political sub-divisions of Liberia. The conference runs from August 6-7 under the auspices of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social with support from partners.
The conference aims at enhancing the effectiveness of efforts to reduce the numbers of deprived girls and young women, improve their wellbeing and capabilities, and thereby catalyzing change for communities, the broader society and the economy.
The Gender boss further indicated that the Ministry takes seriously concerns about confronting challenges young women and girls face on a daily basis. The articulative Gender boss said “for this reason we continue to find better and sustainable ways through which existing problems can be mitigated and emerging challenges can be confronted.”
“I want to state that the National Young Women and Girls Conference that we are all attending today is part of our many response mechanisms. Hopefully, this conference is intended to highlight pertinent issues relating to the wellbeing of young women and girls, but also discuss those issues and how young women and girls themselves can be involved with deciding what role they can play in addressing those issues,” Min. Saydee-Tarr added.
Also speaking, Madam Evelyn Moorehead, Plan International Liberia Country Director, recounted her institution’s support and commitment to improving the wellbeing of young women and girls.
Madam Moorehead highlighted the long standing relationship with the Government of Liberia and recalled the numerous supports her institution has provided to transforming the livelihood of young women and girls.
“In Liberia, since our inception we worked alongside the Government, youth activists and community advocates at a national and county level to ensure that girls can access their basic rights without discrimination, the right to quality education and health services,” Madam Moorehead stated further.
The conference is designed by MGCSP and its partners to afford young women and girls the platform to gather and discuss issues affecting them in their respective communities and develop concrete action plans to address those issues.
The two-day conference will focus on reviewing progress made against recommendations and key actions that came out of the 2018 young women and girl’s conference, creating an environment for young women and girls to network with different stakeholders and share their experiences and to increase young women and girls’ knowledge to make better decisions, take on leadership roles and avoid risky behavior.
The conference will also highlight other areas of increasing young women and girls’ capacity in accessing their sexual reproductive, educational, cultural and economic rights.
The conference targets a total of 150 participants including young women, girls and boys between ages 10-24 years from across the 15 counties in Liberia. The young women, girls and boys is comprise a mixture of college students, High school students, out of school girls, the physically challenged, girls and boys from rural and urban communities, amongst others.
The opening program was graced by other international non-governmental organizations including UNICEF and GIZ amongst others.
