Residents of the Kru Beach Community in West Point are calling on the government and other humanitarian organizations to speedily intervene in addressing the issue of the sea erosion by extending the Coastal Defense Project in that part of the Township.The flood which is the direct result of the overflow of the Atlantic Ocean is said to be on the increase this year and has damaged properties worth more than L$500,000 in the West Point Township.
Speaking to our reporter on Monday in the Kru Beach Community, Madam Mary Teah, a mother of four indicated that the flood has damaged over 100 houses including hers and cited that the Commissioner of the Township has assured that the government is going to intervene to stop the deadly sea erosion; a promise that is unfulfilled.
“The Commissioner told us that they were going to bring the rock so that they can block the sea from disturbing us and this pronouncement made us happy; thinking that our houses were going to be saved, but today our houses are all gone leaving us displaced,” she noted.
She added that members of the community were cited to a meeting in order to provide document to substantiate the ownership of the properties that were wiped away or damaged as a result of the continuous overflow of the sea.
Another resident of over 30 years, Cecelia Nyenpan, told our reporter that she feared that the sea will one day wipe everybody from the Township if nothing is done to remedial the situation and therefore, she was joining her colleagues with a passionate plea to the President of Liberia to extend the coastal defense project to that part of the Township.
“We are appealing to President Weah to come and put big big rock in front of the sea so that the water will go back small,” Nyenpan emphasized.
Also another inhabitant of the Kru Beach Community, Abdul Jalloh, stated that the force experienced from the ocean this year is very excessive and stressed that if the Coastal Defense Project is implemented in the Kru Beach community it will bring serious relief to the residents.
