Liberia has been drawn with neighboring Sierra Leone in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers first round.
The preliminary draw for the marathon qualifiers took place at the headquarters of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Cairo, Egypt on 29 July.
CAF Deputy Secretary-general Anthony Baffoe assisted Khaled Nassar of the CAF competitions department to conduct the draw, which pits some neighbors and regional derbies: Botswana versus Malawi; Mauritius versus Mozambique and Burundi versus Tanzania.
Liberia will play the first leg in Monrovia on 2 September while the return leg will take place in Freetown on 10 September.
Sierra Leone and Liberia have met 16 times since 12 November 1966 with eight wins for Liberia, five draws and three defeats respectively.
Their last four meetings have been international friendlies with two wins, a draw and defeat for Liberia respectively.
The seeding for the first round, which features the 28 lowest ranked teams, was based on the July FIFA world rankings.
The second round will see the top 26 ranked teams being joined by the 14 aggregate winners from the first round drawn into 10 groups of four teams.
The third round will see the 10 group winners drawn into five home-and-away ties.
The winners of each tie will advance to the finals of 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
