The National Elections Commission (NEC) has finally released its preliminary results in the just ended by-election placing Liberty Party’s candidate, Abraham Darius Dillon ahead with 53, 270 votes in the Senatorial elections.
The votes cast in favor of Dillon, who is being supported by the four collaborating opposition political parties, consist of 57.88% of the votes counted in 924 polling places while the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) candidate Abu Bana Kamara takes the lead in the representative election with 5, 516 votes consisting of 45.95 % from 65 out of 94 polling places.
Even though due to the traditional saying that Montserrado County has become the stronghold for the ruling CDC, according to the NEC’s provisional results released late yesterday, Mr. Dillon is in the lead with 16,739 votes over Madam Paulita CC Wie who is said to be having 36, 531 consisting of 36.95 of the entire votes tallied up to press time.
In District # 15, CDC’s Kamara is said to be in the lead with a difference of 975 votes against Telia Urey who has so far neeted 4, 540 votes consisting of 37.89 percent of the total votes tallied as well as reported by the NEC.
The opposition senatorial candidate who is expected to emerge as winner of what many believed would have been a contested senatorial by-elections over the ruling party’s candidate Wie and five others might be officially congratulated today by the CDC if the tallying of the votes is concluded.
Meanwhile, other candidates like Samuel Enders and Kimmie Weeks have already conceded defeat by congratulating Mr. Dillon on their respective Facebook pages as well as through the media while the results from District # 15 is being seriously contested by both candidates currently in the lead.
According to our sources, yesterday, CDC arranged a press conference by 8 a.m. with an objective of conceding defeat and to congratulate the people of Montserrado County, but the party later declined following consultation with the party’s executives to allow the NEC announce at least 80% of the results of the entire votes cast in Montserrado.
CDC Party Chairperson Mulbah Morlu still claims that his party had won and retained the District #15 seat with an overwhelming victory but the four opposition collaborating parties are also convinced that they won the double seats.
On Tuesday evening, CDC Chairperson, Morlu, told press conference that CDC’s candidate in District #15, Abu Kamara got an overwhelming victory even though he could not be definite over their senatorial candidate’s result at the time, he claimed that the party had just tallied 90% of the ballot papers from the polling centers around Montserrado yet, assured his partisans that so far, his candidate, Paulita Wie was in a comfortable lead.
However, Unity Party’s Chairperson, Wilmot Paye, threatened to bring the Weah-led administration to an end if the opposition candidates do not win because their own tallied results showed that both Dillon and Telia Urey won.
The Liberty Party Chairperson, Steve Zargo, also consummated that Dillon and Urey were winners and claimed that they are in irreversible leads and was therefore applauding the residents of Montserrado and District #15 respectively for making history by defeating CDC in what was considered its own backyard.
He mentioned that victories for the opposition in the just ended by-elections annul the myth that Montserrado County belongs to a particular political party indicating, “Our facts gathered from NEC designated polling centers and signed by NEC’s staffers, placed the opposition in an irreversible position and we are only now waiting for confirmation.”
The Lofa County Senator said considering LP’s experienced in the 2017 General Representative elections, in which the Liberty Party took the NEC to Supreme Court signs a caveat that NEC should not take the opposition for granted as its muteness is not weakness.
“Do not underestimate our results. We trust our international partners. We call on the international community as well as ECOWAS to join the Liberian people to see to it that this election comes to a logical conclusion,” he said.
The Senatorial by-election in Montseraddo County was as a result of the death of Geraldine Doe-Sheriff while the representative seat became vacant as a result of the death of District # 15 representative Adolph Akwe Lawrence respectively.
The seven candidates who qualified for the senatorial seat were Kimmie Weeks, Independent; MacDella Cooper, Independent; Massa Massaquoi, Independent; Darius Dillon, Liberty Party; Samuel Enders, Independent; Paulitta Wie, CDC and Mohammed Ayoub Dukuly, Vision for Liberia Transformation.
While the District # 15 representative seat was being contested by Kelvin Morris Bayoh, Independent; Eras Fahnbulleh, Sr. Vision for Liberia Transformation; Slebo Bishop Frank, Independent; Abu Bana Kamara, CDC; Chapy Lamenu Kamara, True Whig Party; Nyan Amos Tubor, Jr. , Coalition for Liberia and Telia Urey All Liberian Party.
