Cllr. Sayma Syrenius Cephus risks being suspended from legal practice in Liberia due to the action meted against him and two others by the United State Treasury Department for alleged corruption.
The Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA) Vice president, Jamel Dehtho, made the disclosure over the weekend in Ganta when he graced the retreat organized by the Female Lawyers of Liberia.
Cllr. Dehtho threatened that the Bar is contemplating on taking further action against Liberia’s Sanctioned Solicitor General; apparently surmising that the suspension by President George Weah is not weighty.
According to the U.S Treasury report, Cephus, Nathaniel McGill and Bill Twehway were placed under sanctions for allegedly tempering with and purposefully withholding evidence in cases, among other things; something the Bar termed as unprofessional.
Rule seven of the code of work and professional ethics of the LBNA prohibits any lawyer from engaging in such act.
Cllr. Dehtho therefore stated that the Bar Association welcomes the decision by the U.S. Government and is ready to take action against its member involved.
He reiterated that the Bar Association stands ready to ensure that it supports the rule of law in Liberia
He then recommended the need for more visibility of the work of the professional women body adding, “You need to focus on outreach and awareness; let people know what you are doing including the impacts you have made as well as your activities.”
