The National Elections Commission (NEC), has burnt ballot papers and other electoral materials used during the 2020 Special Senatorial Elections, National Referendum and the two Representatives By-elections continued on Saturday across the country.
The Commission said that the process which started on Tuesday, March 26, 2022 in Margibi County, continued simultaneously on Saturday at 14 of its 19 Magisterial Offices throughout the country.
A NEC statement stated that the burning of ballot papers and other disposable electoral materials will close at its Magisterial offices in Lower Bong, Maryland and Grand Gedeh Counties on, April 4, 2022, April 6, 2022 and April 13, 2022, respectively.
The statement from NEC on Friday said that the ballot papers’ burning exercise affected the Central Warehouse at its Headquarters in Monrovia and all of the nineteen (19) Magisterial offices across the country.
According to the NEC statement issued on April 1, 2022, the disposal of the used electoral materials is in accordance with Article 4.16 of the New Elections Law of 1986.
The law states, “the Commission shall preserve all writs issued for election and all ballots cast and register of voters made in an election until the validity of such election and its result can no longer be disputed. The ballot papers may then be destroyed”.
The National Elections Commission invited all political parties, coalitions, alliances, civil society groups and the media to witness all of the burning processes across the country.
